InterTradeIreland 2014 All-Island Innovation Conference
InterTradeIreland 2014 All-Island Innovation Conference – 30th September 2014
Harnessing Productive Disruption within Teams Can Lead to Successful Innovation for Businesses.
Evolution Environmental attended InterTradeIreland’s All-Island Innovation Conference held in the O’Brien Centre for Science in University College Dublin on Tuesday 30th September 2014. Harnessing the innovation potential of your team and encouraging productive disruption were the themes of the event which was part of the InterTradeIreland All-Island Innovation Programme. This fantastic programme promotes innovation, engagement and knowledge sharing amongst business leaders, students, academics, and policy makers across the island of Ireland.
The morning session opened with an address from Professor Orla Feely, UCD Vice-President for Research, Innovation and Impact who outlined UCD’s long-standing record of active engagement with industry and its ongoing efforts to encourage innovation amongst its staff, students and researchers.
The morning session concluded with an address from the day’s keynote speaker, Dr Trish Gorman. A featured speaker at the World Innovation Forum, Dr Gorman is a former Dean of the Jack Welch Management Institute and a former Academic Director of the Global Consulting Practicum at the Wharton Graduate School of Business. Dr Gorman’s address, entitled ‘Disruptive Tendencies: Harnessing the Innovation Potential of Your Team’ outlined the importance of valuing the individual, and often conflicting, personalities and traits of the four key personality types that, according to Dr Gorman, exist in successful teams.
Stating you cannot simply rely on creativity and determination when aiming to disrupt a market, Dr Gorman explained that it is important to create a team environment where the members are willing to share their great ideas and also that failures are inevitable – it is what is learned from the failures that is important and processes should be in place to manage these failures.
Following the break for lunch which provided opportunity for networking and discussion, the afternoon session featured several industry innovators outlining their experiences with managing innovation in their teams. The speakers included; Dr Johnny Ryan, Executive Director of UCD Innovation Academy; Andrew Bolster, founder of Farset Labs; Clare Dillon, Developer Experience Group Lead with Microsoft Ireland; Dr Conor Hanley, President of Cardiology, Strategic Business Unit, ResMed Inc.; Breda Moore, Technical Director of T.E. Laboratories Ltd; and, Christine Nangle, Product Compliance Director with eDocs. After sharing their experiences, the panel partook in a Q&A Session, fielding questions and queries from the floor. The afternoon was completed with a presentation by Dr Chris Van Egeraat, NUI Maynooth, who was unveiling his early findings in his work to analyse the distribution of key employment sectors across Ireland.
The conference was a great success and very informative. Evolution Environmental look forward to attending future events in this space as we attempt to learn from the leaders in innovation and creativity in the Irish business community. Well done to everyone at InterTradeIreland on a well organised event.
